You can look at the Milky Way through a small telescope on a dark, clear night and see that it is the light from vast numbers of faint stars. You can see parts of it wherever you are on the Earth. In the north, the constellations it goes through include Auriga, Cassiopeia, and Cygnus. The brightest part of the Milky Way is the bulge at the centre of the Galaxy, which is in the constellation Sagittarius.
