Aspiration (送氣)
Aspiration is an expulsion of air as a consonant is articulated; the /t/ in top is aspirated and as such may be represented in phonemic transcription as /th/.

Assimilation (同化)
Assimilation is a change to a sound under the influence of another, as, for example, when the prefix in became im in imprison under the influence of the bilabial /p/.

Vowel (元音; 母音)
A vowel is a voiced speech sound constricted only by the shape of the tongue and the lips.

Consonant (輔音; 子音)
A consonant is a speech sound produced with total or substantial obstruction of the airflow, e.g. [p] and [f].

Homophone (同音詞)
A homophone is a lexeme that is. pronounced in the same way as another, e.g. meet and meat are homophones.

Phoneme (音素)
A phoneme is a sound that is semantically or functionally distinctive in a language system.

Transliteration (音譯)
Translation in which the source text is replaced by a target text on the basis of a sharing of the same or similar pronunciation of the two texts irrespective of their meaning.
